  • Holotype: NMMB P 14218.
  • Paratypes: (6), NMMB P 16638, 16639; CAS 236966; ASIZP 63164 (3).

Type locality: Dong-gang, Pingtung, southwestern Taiwan, South China Sea [collected from the fish landing ground near Dong-gang fish market], ca. 200 m depth.

Etymology: From the Greek poly (=many), and spondylos (= vertebrae), in reference to its having more vertebrae than any of its congeners.
