Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! Just a few things to watch out for...[1]. For Porifera Incertae sedis, I have corrected the formatting and the page name convention.[2] OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:58, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects to articles[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for your contributions. i have a little remark. If you add species from bulletins please add allso the bulletin. See for example Sylvisorex silvanorum. I have update this species and make a link to Bonner Zoologische Beiträge.

"Taxa by author" categories[edit]

Hi Burmeister. Thank for creating the recent "Taxa by author" categories. If possible, please also create the matching author pages: for instance Ronald H. Pine, so that his name isn't red-linked in the Category:Ronald H. Pine taxa page. Thank you! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 04:28, 12 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Hi, Tommy. Many thanks for advice. I create this category Category:Ken P. Aplin taxa, but already exist Category:Ken Aplin taxa. What I can do? Delete or redirect? Burmeister 12:34, 12 November 2016 (UTC) Moved from User talk:Tommy Kronkvist, since the discussion started here.[reply]
Hello again. Since both of the author pages Ken Aplin and Ken P. Aplin are correct as such, both should remain: i.e. none of them should be deleted. However, the "Ken Aplin" page was created first, and a lot more other pages are linked to "Ken Aplin" compared to other pages linked to "Ken P. Aplin". (You can always check this yourself by clicking the "What links here" link in the "Tools" section, in the left Wikispecies' menu.) Because of this the "Ken Aplin" page should be the main page, and "Ken P. Aplin" should redirect to it. That is also the case right now. So far so good! :-)
Now, the "Taxa by author" categories. Category pages are different than other pages. (Technically speaking, they are not in the same namespace.) There should only be one "Taxa by author" category per author, and it should always link to the "main" author page, in this case Ken Aplin. Category pages should never be redirected. The reason for this is that when other links are changed, redirected category pages might easily become broken redirects or double redirects, which are bad. Therefore:
 1. The Category:Ken Aplin taxa page should remain as it is, since it is linked to the main author page.
 2. Secondly, all pages in the "Ken P. Aplin taxa" category should be changed, so that they link to the "Category:Ken Aplin taxa" page instead. Otherwise they will become red links after the next step.
 3. When that is all fixed, the Category:Ken P. Aplin taxa should be deleted.
 4. This last step is not strictly necessary, but preferably all pages that links to Ken P. Aplin should be changed, so that they link to the main author page Ken Aplin instead. If this is done, we will have no redirects, and no red links = best practice.
We could do this the other way around, eg. link all the pages to "Ken P. Aplin" instead of to "Ken Aplin", but since a lot more pages link to the latter, this would involve a lot more work.
Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:37, 12 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]

"Publications" section[edit]

Sorry about my typo here – thank you for correcting it!

I see that you have been exchanging Publications templates with the standard ==Publications== heading. That is good. When you do that (or when you add the heading to new pages) could you please also add the Inc template directly beneath it? That will render the exact same result as the Publications template, but without its software bugs! Please see the Inc template page to see an example of how it is supposed to be used. Please also note that using the Inc template is not a mandatory must, so if you happen to forget it, that's okay... :-)

All the best, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 01:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Thank you for the tips!!! Almost two years out, it will take a while to remember so many details. Thank you. Burmeister 01:34, 13 November 2016 (UTC) Moved from User talk:Tommy Kronkvist, since the discussion started here.[reply]
You are welcome. I understand that it will take some time to remember all the details; also, quite a lot have changed here during the passed two years. Wikispecies is not only a wiki closely related to evolution – it is also evolving by itself!
One more thing: please make it a habit to always reply on the same page where a discussion started. If I start a discussion here on your talk page, then all answers to that should be made on this page. And of course, if you start a discussion on my talk page, all of the answers should be made there instead, regardless whether it is me, you or someone else who answers. Otherwise it can be very difficult to follow a discussion! It might be easy if only two people talk about one issue and reply on each other's talk pages (like you and I do now) but often there are many, many people involved in a discussion. For example consider the Village Pump, and other such pages. It would be impossible for users to partake in a discussion together with perhaps ten or more other users, if they all answered on each others talk pages, instead of on the same page. That's why I have moved your two recent edits back here, so the entire discussions can be found in one place. Please remember that Wikispecies is a very open community – this is not "our" discussion! Other users are welcome join in, and every user should be able to easily follow a conversation (whether or not they take part in it).
If one is worried that a reply might be missed in a discussion, there are ways to deal with that. Personally, when I write something on a talk page I always also add that page to my watchlist. Doing so is easy: simply click the little star next to the "View history" link. It will then turn blue, indicating that it is added to your watchlist. Click it again to remove it. (Another method of adding a page to the watchlist is to click the "Watch this page" checkbox below the "Edit summary" field, before saving the page.) After a page is added to the watchlist it is simply a matter of clicking the "Watchlist" link near the top right corner – it is situated between the "Preferences" and "Contributions" link. As I am one of Wikispecies' bureaucrats, I actually have more than 6,000 pages in my watchlist... Therefore, to make it easier to see recent changes I almost always click the "Hide my edits" checkbox on my watchlist page, and then hit the "Show" button. Then I only see recent edits on my watchlist that other users have made, which makes the list a lot more useful. (By the way, you find links to edit the list below the "Watchlist" headline. Using the different links you can remove pages that doesn't need to be "watched" any more.)
In addition to the watchlist one can use the Ping template. If I want your attention in an important matter (for instance at the Village Pump) then I can add the code string Burmeister to my message, and you will automatically get a note saying that someone is trying to reach you, with a link to the appropriate message. You will see that you have a new notification when the "Alerts icon" changes colour. (The icon looks like a bell and sits next to your user name, near the top right corner of the window.) Please note that the "ping" function shouldn't be used too excessively: pinging users for every small issue in the world is only annoying... :-)
Again, thank you for your edits! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:02, 13 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Application for Checkuser[edit]

Referring to earlier discussions regarding a local Checkuser policy, I herebye apply to get Checkuser user rights, although we havnt reached a consensus reg Checkuser policy, but I want to give it a try if I can get the required votes. For a request to succeed a minimum of 25 support votes and an 80% positive vote are required (subject to the normal bureaucrat discretion). Requests for checkuser run for two weeks, and I ask kindly that somone starts the poll, like we do for adminship applications.

Please also note that CheckUser actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Checkusers. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two checkusers, for mutual accountability. I dont want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for checkuser.

My request to the Wikispecies community is here

Another application for Check User[edit]

As pointed out above by User:Dan Koehl, we need at least two Check Users for this wiki. I am nominating myself and would be happy to receive any feedback that you have to give (positive, negative, or neutral). Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Koavf. Thanks. Additional Checkuser Application[edit]

I also have added my name to those willing to be a checkuser. Please see my application here Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Faendalimas. I listed this yeasterday but have been encouraged to do a mass mail. I would also take the opportunity to make sure everyone knows that any editor can vote but that it is imperative that as many do as possible, for all 4 of the current applicants, please have your say. Checkuser voting has strict policy rules regarding number of votes. You will have other messages from the other Users concerned you can also read about it in the discussion on the Village Pump - Wikispecies:Village_Pump#Application_for_Checkuser. Standing for role of checkUser[edit]

Like some of our colleagues (who I support), I am offering to serve as a checkuser, not least to ensure adequate coverage in case one of the others is unavailable.

Please comment at Wikispecies:Checkusers/Requests/Pigsonthewing.

[Apologies if you receive a duplicate notification; I wasn't aware of Wikispecies:Mail list/active users, and sent my original notification to the list of administrators instead.] MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:59, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Patroller?[edit]

Dear, Burmeister! Would you accept to be a Patroller on Wikispecies? Wikispecies need more Patrollers and presently there is only 37 out of 150 active users.
Please see Patrollers for information about patrollers rights. If you are positive, I can nominate you on the requests for patroller rights on your behalf.

RFC on Checkusers[edit]

With one week to go I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting on the current CheckUser applications. They can all be found together on a single RFC: Wikispecies:Requests_for_Comment#Checkusers.

It is extremely important with votes such as this for everyone to be involved. There are strict rules in the Wikimedia Foundation Policy guidelines on these votes. I would urge people to have a good understanding of what a CheckUser does. This can be read up on here on the page discussing CheckUser's Wikispecies:Checkusers. Links on this page will take you to other policy information on Meta, HowTo for our site etc.

I would also urge people to look at our own policy development and some past discussion on this can be found here: Wikispecies_talk:Local_policies#Local_CU_Policy.

Wikispecies has in the past had issues that has required the intervention that is supported by the ability to do a CheckUser. Many of us are aware of this. The capacity to do this ourselves greatly speeds up this process. Although SockPuppetry can sometimes be identified without using a CheckUser in order to do the necessary steps to stop it or even prevent it requires evidence. We all know that sockpupets can do significant damage.

This is an important step for Wikispecies. It is a clear demonstration we can run ourselves as a Wiki Project part of Wiki Media Foundation. When I and several others first discussed this we knew it would be difficult at the time to meet all the criteria. We have only now decided to try and get this feature included in Wikispecies. By doing this it can lead to other areas where Wikispecies can further develop its own policies. In some areas we have unique needs, different to the other Wiki's. It is timely we were able to develop all these policies.

Patrolling rights[edit]

Dear Burmeister, You have been granted Patroller user rights, which may be granted to experienced Wikispecies users who have demonstrated an understanding of Wikispecies policies and guidelines.

The user right Patroller gives the user a right to have their page edits automatically marked as patrolled, but also to patrol new pages and mark them as patrolled. For more information, read Wikispecies:Patrollers.

This user has Patroller rights on Wikispecies. (verify)

You may as Patroller use the Patroller user box on your user page. Copy and paste the following code on your user page:
User Patroller

In your case, using babel, you can actually use this code:

Please consider carrying out daily patrols of new pages and edits made by users who are not autopatrolled. Here you can see the Patrol statistics for the last 7 days on specieswiki.

Request for vote reg use of BASEPAGENAME[edit]

The previous discussions regarding if we should subst:ing BASEPAGENAME and change all BASEPAGENAME into susbt:BASEPAGENAME did not really reach a consensus.

Please vote here on the Village pump!

If you are not sure on your opinion, you can read and join the discussion about the claimed advantages and disadvantages of using BASEPAGENAME

Wikispecies Oversighter[edit]

Wikispecies has no local Oversighter. Since I had the communitys confidence regarding the previous application for Checkusers rights, as per local Oversight policy on META, I hereby apply to get Oversighters user rights, as a request to the Wikispecies community.

Application is located at Requests for Comment.

Please also note that Oversighter actions are logged, but for privacy reasons the logs are only visible to other Oversighters. Because of this, Wikispecies must always have no fewer than two oversighters, for mutual accountability. I don't want to suggest anyone, but hope that someone feel inspired and will step forward and also apply for oversighters rights.

Oversight nomination[edit]

Please refer to Wikispecies:Oversighters/Requests/Koavf for a second Oversight nomination. Note that we must have at least two Oversigthers in order for anyone to have these user rights. All feedback is welcome. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:50, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Schulze templates[edit]

Thanks for fixing the Schulze templates, and others. It seems I haven't really got the hang of how to find the best/correct BHL links… Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 00:29, 12 May 2017 (UTC).[reply]

It took me a while to realize the location of the "url for current page", but it's more simple and the code gets cleaner. Regards Burmeister (talk) 12:32, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So... to make for example this edit, where did you find the "URL for current page"? I'm asking since I used
 • /item/47657#page/593/mode/1up
which leads to www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/47657#page/593/mode/1up i.e. the "same" URL as in the BHL template. You however used
 • page/13278935
which leads to www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/13278935#page/593/mode/1up i.e. a different URL but the same page (oddly enough...)
You're way of linking is by all means superior, but where do you find those links? By the way I almost always get my links from the search function on the BHL main page. Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 00:08, 21 May 2017 (UTC).[reply]
Follow your example, on the lateral side of the page, under de "Pages", you will find that "URL for Current Page http://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/13278935" ; I just copy the end of the code "page/13278935" and insert it in the template BHL. Burmeister (talk) 19:19, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Considering I've been using BHL for several years it's a bit surprising that I've been able to miss such an apparent text string+link up until now! I guess I've been too focused on the actual contents of the BHL documents... hehe In any case, thanks a lot for enlightening me – it was most helpful. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:15, 28 May 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Redundant authors[edit]

Hello. You recently created the page Aaron M. Bauer. This is clearly a duplicate of the page Aaron Bauer, which has existed since 2007. Please remember to search before creating potentially redundant articles, and create redirects if necessary to accommodate name variants. Cheers, -Animalparty (talk) 05:43, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I ask for the fusion of the articles, keeping the name as Aaron M. bauer, for consistency with outhers authors. Thanks Burmeister (talk) 13:46, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming new users[edit]

Olá Burmeister! I saw your welcome note on User 45.48.45.18:s talk page, were you used the Welcome template. Welcoming new users is of course always good, but I want to give you a a handy hint. When welcoming an "IP user" that has not logged in, it is better to use the Welcome-anon template instead. That one includes information and links for creating a proper user account, rather than simply editing as an "anonymous" IP user. (I have changed the template on the above mentioned talk page, but kept your signature since it was originally you who welcomed him/her. :-) Thank you for your contributions! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:30, 6 July 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Template loop error fixes[edit]

Template loop error message
(click the picture to see a bigger version)

Thank you very much for your many recent edits fixing "template loops" within Taxonavigation templates. I have updated the Taxonav template documentation to better illustrate how it is supposed to be used. Hopefully this will help minimize future errors. I've also uploaded a screenshot to Commons showing what the problem looks like. The picture can be used when explaining the problem on people's talk pages etc, and I have also included it here on your talk page. Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:00, 12 July 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Talking about this, the category yet have ±280 pages with loop (probably all relationed with Fucophycidae), but I don't able to find where are the loops. Can you take a look? Regards Burmeister (talk) 14:43, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing, I'll check it out tonight. Best wishes, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:11, 12 July 2017 (UTC).[reply]
Hi again. In regards to this edit of the Eupulmonata template about template loops, do you happen to know which other templates were involved? At the moment pages such as Euglandina rosea have a rather "long" Taxonavigation section which could be mended by a properly used Taxonav template, but we need of course use it without also getting template loops. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 21:07, 16 November 2017 (UTC).[reply]
"Only use this on Familia template level within "Taxonavigation templates"", I think if you want to use in others high taxa you must edit the template to avoid loop (and permit the use in other taxa) or create other template for that specific use. I don't known about the technical stuff. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 21:24, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your swift reply. I've created a page for the Spiraxidae family, with a Spiraxidae template including Taxonav to match. This solves the (aesthetic) problem with Euglandina and other daughter taxa.
I had forgotten about the Fucophycidae issue you mention above, but will try to take care of it tomorrow. It's rather odd though, since a whole bunch of Fucus pages shows up in Category:Pages with template loops, but I can't seem to see any error messages on the actual Fucus pages. But as I said that's for tomorrow – it's getting late and I've had a long day... :) Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 22:19, 16 November 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Classification mismatch[edit]

When adding Eriphyla argentina species based on WORMS classification I arrived in a situation I could not solve (sorry, this is my first experience). I have based the classification on WORMS for the genus Eriphyla (http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=525441). In this scheme, the grouping is as follows: Class Bivalvia -- Subclass Heterodonta -- Infraclass Archiheterodonta -- Order Carditida -- Superfamily Crassatelloidea -- Family Astartidae -- genus Eriphyla. Previous established classification jumped from Subclass Heterodonta to Order Veneroida -- Superfamily Astartoidea -- Family Astartidae -- genus Eriphyla. I suspect I can make things worse If I try to unify both classifications. Could you please help in this and explain me how should I behave concerning Wikispecies? Thanks a lot! --Fernando Archuby (talk) 01:51, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Fernando Archuby:! I think that WoRMS classification is more update, it's right? So we can update the template Astartidae to use Crassatelloidea, not more Astartoidea, and then create the missing templates (template:Crassatelloidea and template:Carditida), doing this the WoRMS classification will appears in Eriphyla argentina. The Help:Contents provide good information for start editing in WS, you can also see other pages to view the codes used for creating and formatting of the entries. Any specific doubts you always can ask. Regards Burmeister (talk) 12:58, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Author names[edit]

We have an agreement to use the full author names (if we know). I see that you make redirect from full name to name with an abbreviations. See Marinus S. Hoogmoed. Please don't do this never again. PeterR (talk) 03:59, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @PeterR:! I'm agree with full names, but same names were create as abbreviate form, and we must move the pages to preserve the historic of the pages and not recreate as new pages. So please try to move the pages. Regards Burmeister (talk) 12:17, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

clarification of formatting pages[edit]

I see we were both editing page Haploporidae at just about the same time. I was baffled when I saw that Incertae sedis had been placed in parentheses and undid it. Then I checked view history. I had'nt seen the term Incertae sedis in parentheses before and thought I had made an error. I do prefer the Incertae sedis in parentheses for style but since I hadn't ever seen it, I undid it not realizing you had made the change. I'm glad this is the preferred styling and will definitely use it in the future. Thanks Nytexcome (talk) 17:20, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Nytexcome:! Incertae sedis is in latin, so go in italic, as nomen nudum or nomen dubium. You can see more in en:Incertae sedis. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 17:27, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dagger symbol[edit]

About when you restored the dagger symbol in the "Name section" of the Daspletosaurus torosus page: I guess you're right – the is no rule against that. Marking taxa as extinct outside of the "Taxonavigation section" isn't common practice among our editors, but I guess it's up to every user to decide for themselves and add the dagger if they like to.

Aside from that, the examples given in the Help:Name section guideline does hint that the taxon name in the "Name section" should not start with a bullet symbol (you know, the round circle in the beginning of every row in a list). The reason is of course simple: only one taxon is presented in the "Name section", and since a single item can't really be called a list, no list symbol is needed. (As opposed to the taxon names in the "Synonyms section" where we do use the bullet symbol, since there are almost always more than one synonym.)

So, as I understand it, the following syntax would be correct:

Name

Some taxon (with or without † symbol, per user preference)

Synonyms

 • Some othertaxon
 • Some moretaxa etc…

However using:

Name

 • Some taxon etc…

is probably not correct, regardless of whether the dagger symbol is used or not.

Having said all this, I don't really care whether the dagger symbol is used in the "Name section" or not. After all the main reason for my initial edit was to add a picture of the Daspletosaurus torosus fossil! But as for the bullet symbol I personally don't think it should be used anywhere in the "Name section" at all, i.e. not for taxon name, nor syntypes, type locations, etc. Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:11, 1 August 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Range block[edit]

Hey there, would you consider a temporary rangeblock for this image vandal? It's too large to globally lock but 37.154.0.0/16 should do the trick until we can get a filter together. Alternately, if you want, I can e-mail you a filter that will work for now but you'll need to set it to disallow (which shouldn't have any false positives.) Praxidicae (talk) 12:58, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I already blocked the 37.154.0.0/16. The filter would help a lot but I don't know how to set it up. Thanks! Burmeister (talk) 13:05, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

RMaung (WMF) 17:04, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Heya, no issue with the changes but a couple of questions. We supposed to be using cats and not the author template? I thought I saw different recently. No problem for me just wanted to know.

Also a question on asian name formations. I saw you fixed Minh Le's name cool with that, but I have seen conflicting ways for this. I recently made a page for Zhou Ting, which is how she prefers her name, I know her, but following other names here I made it Ting Zhou as Ting is her first name, but typical of many Chinese she is refered to by her last name then her first name, even in papers. How are we supposed to do this? Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:54, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

With the template Author for categories, the HotCat dont' work, so the format is much more appropriate. About the Minh Duc Le, most of the papers that i saw/read use the full name format, specially recent ones, and several users here prefer full names format, so I moved. Burmeister (talk) 23:11, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info on the Author template I was not aware, I will go back to using cats. With Minh Duc Le I agree no problem, was more referring to Ting Zhao which is how I created it, but many Chinese use their names as second name first name, including Zhao Ting, both in pubs and in person. So for this should I follow the english style as I have or write it with the Chinese style since it is her name. In her publications she is refered to as eith Zhao T. or Zhao Ting. Thanks for your help. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:18, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Faendalimas: I really don't know how procede about Chinese name, normally i follow the paper(s), but I agree that are conflicting ways, perhaps a broader discussion in VillagePump with community for normatize chinese names may be appropriate. Ptychozoon horsfieldii[edit]

Why you change again Ptychozoon horsfieldii?. You get first Type locality and then holotype. The holotype is not from Ptychozoon horsfieldii but from Pteropleura horsfieldii . You find the holotype in the BMNH under Pteropleura horsfieldii and not under Ptychozoon horsfiedii. PeterR (talk) 12:00, 18 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the holotype belong to Ptychozzon horsfieldii, as accepted combination, Pteropleura horsfieldii is just the original combination; the change of genus do not affect the typification of the taxon. Holotype (Name-bearing types) is always the first nomenclatural act in all descriptions, so it come first, there is no reason to wikispecies be different in format, since researchers;authors always start the description with the type not with locality. Re: your recent revert[edit]

I notice you reverted my edit on a species page to add epithet etymology. There was no edit summary so I am left wondering as to your rationale. For now, I restored my edit and added a footnote for the convenience of anyone who doubts the veracity of that etymology. In interest of immproving my future edits (I am interested in genus and epithet etymologies), please explain what aspect of my edit was not up to par.--Pitke (talk) 11:05, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Pitke:, sorry about that, i was mark the page as patrolled and revert accidentally. Try to use "Etymology:", the footnote is not necessary. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 12:08, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

'BHLpage' vs 'BHL|page'[edit]

Hi Burmeister - thanks for checking out on this! Could you explain to me (in simple language without any computer jargon!!) what the difference between these is, please? And why did my test edit not work - it seemed OK to me, at least at first sight, as it achieved the desired purpose on the taxon page from where it was linked (which was why I hadn't self-reverted). My aim is to get the link to BHL pages to be just a language-neutral number, without any words like 'bhl' that need translating, or be confusing to new users. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 14:16, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MPF: BHLpage is for cite a specific page, normally I used in name section for display page of description (I think is that you want, see the modification that i made in Calidris tenuirostris); BHL is used in template references, so the "BHL" indication is usefull to indicate the origin of the link (example : ), your modification in the template remove the BHL, and create a numerical system [1], that is not interessant in the reference templates. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 14:32, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! So any time I see 'BHL|page' in a taxon page, just to remove the '|' :-) MPF (talk) 15:32, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Transferência de página[edit]

Caro colega. Obrigado pelas dicas. Procurei no manual do Wikispecies como transferir uma pagina para a outra. Infelizmente não estou familiarizado com essa plataforma (é bem diferente das outras Wiki em que trabalhei). Obrigado!

Use of "author2" template†[edit]

Hi Burmeister, Thank you for your recent message concering the use of author2 templates. I started doing this following the example of "Caftaric" who was using "author2" on pages I had recently edited. Assuming that he was an administrator, I followed his example. I will gladly avoid using author2 but please inform Caftaric about this. He has been on a wild streak adding the "taxonbar" template on every page he encounters and at the same time uses the author2 template and deletes the "Category:author taxa" template. I will refrain from use of the author2 template, but now I am wondering if this should also apply to the "taxonbar" template. Please let me know. Kind regards, Nytexcome (talk) 22:45, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

proper format for inks templates[edit]

Nytexcome (talk) 19:41, 24 June 2020 (UTC)Hi Burmeister! A certain editor who apparently likes arbitrarily making format changes is at it again. He is now changing {WoRMS||9999999} to {WoRMSID|9999999}. I have never seen in the thousands of pagss I have editied this particular format. Is this a new format change? I have consicentiously tried, since first editing Wikispecies, to follow the examples of veteran administrators as to proper formatting. This prticular editor/administrator seems to want to edit pages following his own personal taste as to what is correct. Is this concept that each editor does his own thing a new policy? If so, it is waste of time which could be better spent doing research and making real actual informational changes. This is very frustrating and annoying since I do mt best to make valid edits and not just to make changes to up my edit count. Please let me know. Thanks for your attention to this matter.Nytexcome (talk) 19:41, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

could I see a link for what your talking about here please. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 19:54, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please see Wikispecies pages Discidae and Cylindrella as examples. Thanks, Nytexcome (talk) 20:56, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! @Nytexcome:. I didn't know about this template (WoRMSID) until now. The template is redundant with WoRMS (oldest and most used), so please don't use it. It's the same case of Taxonbar (and the same user), the best solution (i think) is discuss about this in Village Pump and the community must decide what to do. Zt templates[edit]

Burmeister,

You have to move the Zt template to an author template. See Template:Katwate et al., 2014. You have delete the Zt template and now you missing the history.PeterR (talk) 12:15, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is not necessary ask him, I will do. I would like to expose that some time ago you deleted several templates without caring about the history of the pages, and not only templates, you redirect author pages when recriate them, not moving to preserve historic. Where to set the author category?[edit]

Hello Burmeister, you removed the author category from Spermophilus mollis, which I had transferred from the later combination Urocitellus mollis to the original combination. Was that incorrect, or what is usus here at Wikispecies? --Thiotrix (talk) 12:26, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Author category, at least in zoology, remains in the accepted/valid combination and is not included in the original combination, because of the duplication of the item in author category. See the discussion in VillagePump (February 2020, Scope of "Author taxa" categories revisited). Regards, Burmeister (talk) 12:30, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information. I'm not a zoologist, but for me this seems incredibly "wrong", to have a name assigned to an author, that he has never authored? But I will keep the author category at the accepted name, if this is usus for Wikispecies editors. --Thiotrix (talk) 12:39, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In zoology, the priority is not lost , in case of recombination. Burmeister (talk) 12:44, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About the deer names, that became synonyms[edit]

Hi Burmeister,

Just because a taxon name became a synonym, it doesn't mean that it not belong to a certain author. It is like someone wrote a book, after a while another book, and than you do not recognize that the first book was written by the same author. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 08:55, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

When you do this you duplicate the entry in author category, and we already discuss this in VillagePump (February 2020, Scope of "Author taxa" categories revisited). And please correct you revertions. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 11:46, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in my opinion the synonyms should also be there; but if the people doesn't want them there, than I correct my CORRECTION. And next time ping me so I know that you answered. Cheers. DenesFeri (talk) 09:25, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Authority control[edit]

I am very sorry that my edit in Loris lydekkerianus was not correct. I tried to put the authority control template, which would include the links reflected by the Module: Authority_control, but it didn't work; instead if the template Taxonbar works correctly, introducing all the links that are in Wikidata to the external biological databases.
If the taxonbar template is not accepted by the community and the authority control template does not work, what can we do?, Do we have to go to WD to access the external databases?. :-( Regards, --MartinGala (talk) 03:02, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. has there been any discussion on using the authority control vs. taxonbar templates? I have not found any.

Hi @MartinGala:! See Wikispecies:Village_Pump/Archive_53#Vote_of_"taxonbar"_template_use_in_Wikispecies_articles. External biological databases can be added directly in Wikidata. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 13:06, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mediyansyah[edit]

The full name from Mediyansyah is Mediyansyah Mediyansyah. See Treubia, 2019, vol. 46.

In PDF the spelling is Mediyansyah only, but I fix as "Mediyansyah Mediyansyah", Regards, Burmeister (talk) 14:35, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's possible Mediyansyah doesn't have an actual family name. According to Wikipedia that is common in Indonesia. Monster Iestyn (talk) 16:02, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Leonid Aleksandrovich Portenko[edit]

Hi! Could you explain why you changed "Soviet" to "Ukrainian"? Thank you, Hunu (talk) 06:54, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Hunu:, you in June made a edit in Igor Mikhailovich Gromov with this summary: "Soviet is not nationality, it's political system", so i change soviet for Ukranian, beacause in english wikipedia are write "Ukrainian origin", if that is wrong you can change or correct yorself, no problem! Regards, Burmeister (talk) 12:25, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Yes it's the system, so I believe, word "soviet" does not need big "S", but may be I'm wrong. I don't like complicate formula German-Estonian-Russian and so on. I think, that nationality or country of origin is not critically important for science. Yes, Leonid Portenko had Ukrainian Origin, he was graduated from Moscow University in 1925, he was working in Leningrad Zoological Institute and his main interest was birds of high Arctics, especially from Chukotka Peninsula. May be the one word is better to explain his country affiliation? But I'm not fan of soviet system at all. Hunu (talk) 17:05, 28 June 2021 (UTC

Jurassic Park = Accurate[edit]

Why did you reverted the edits I made? Jurassic Park is an accurate source since the dinosaurs could pronate their wrists and they did not have feathers, because they were not birds. 108.207.249.33 23:31, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that per the Wikispecies Image Guidelines, using artistic restorations of prehistoric life (e.g. drawings of dinosaurs) is unrecommended since they are often incorrect or impossible to verify (for example due to the fossils being incomplete, or in regards to the colours of the animal, when alive). I've therefore removed all such pictures from the pages you edited (regardless whether the picture was added by you or someone else). I've also deleted the User:108.207.249.33 page you created, since user pages are restricted to registered user accounts only. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:55, 25 December 2021 (UTC).[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Rute Beatriz Garcia Clemente(-)Carvalho[edit]

"Brazilian surname, no hifen"... actually this one might be a little weird from what I can see: she uses a hyphen in in her ResearchGate and ORCiD pages, as well as in many of her publications themselves. Though then again, it is not used in this page nor the linked Lattes Platform page containing her CV. Either way, it does seem to me like Clemente(-)Carvalho is intended as a single surname. Monster Iestyn (talk) 22:22, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

She may use Clemente-Carvalho for taxon authority purposes, but the name dont' have a hifen, there are other cases, like Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro (the name) and Miranda-Ribeiro (taxon authority). Since Carvalho is a common surname with a lot usage, she may decide use Clemente-Carvalho for disambiguation, I dont known. Burmeister (talk) 01:00, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know either, it is a little odd. "Garcia" is also a family name, so it would seem like she has three surnames. But Portuguese/Brazilian names should be sorted under the last element of the name, which might be "Clemente Carvalho" in this case with or without the hyphen, but it's hard to tell. "Mentions" another unconsensual stuff!! :) Meyer is John R. Meyer and Hahn is Donald E. Hahn. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 16:10, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information! And yes, I thought about the "mentions". Looks odd and right-out ugly to me (and doesn't follow the ICZN Code, I think?) but again – no consensus. It was mainly Mariusm who first started to use "mentions" here at Wikispecies, backed up by a few other users. That was 14 years ago... :) Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 00:49, 11 November 2022 (UTC).[reply]

Template[edit]

Hello, can you help me please as you did there? I just created before I noticed . Christian Ferrer (talk) 08:52, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

 Done Burmeister (talk) 10:54, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks! Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:57, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Main page template[edit]

Hi. Could you unlock this pages (lock for IP only):

I wanted to fix main page(s) for mobile users and for screen readers. Just a structure change. On PC everything will be in same places. Just more readable for on a phone and for blind people.

I'm (re)creating a Polish page for the moment. I can change English later. Nux (talk) 19:28, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nux: I change protection. Regards. Burmeister (talk) 20:46, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cryptoblepharus type species designation[edit]

Hello Burmeister. In 2018 you added the author "Setjneger" to the Cryptoblepharus page, but I suppose instead you had "Stejneger" in mind, as in Leonhard Hess Stejneger? –Regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 02:28, 5 January 2023 (UTC).[reply]

Yes, its a typo, already corrected, Thanks Burmeister (talk) 02:30, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User page semi-protected due to excessive vandalism[edit]

Hello Burmeister. Your user page User:Burmeister has been targeted by vandalism several times this year. I've therefore semi-protected it, hoping that the vandalism will stop. As you may know I first protected it for a period of one year on 15 October 2021, and that was very effective. I did the same this time, so the protection will be automatically lifted 13 April 2024. (Protecting pages for an unlimited period of time is unrecommended, with the exception of "official" Wikispecies pages such as Policies, Guidelines, Archives, the Help pages, etc., as well as "technical" pages e.g., pages in MediaWiki namespace, Modules, Portals, and a few Templates that are connected to specific Modules.)

Technical details. As you know "semi-protection" isn't a "full protection": it only means that the page can't be edited by unregistered users ("IP") or newly registered users. It can still be edited by administrators and users that have been registered for more than 5 days, and have made at least 10 edits. If this doesn't help, I will raise the shields up to full protection, in which case your user page can only be edited by administrators and bureaucrats. Hopefully that will not be necessary!

The very best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 15:58, 13 April 2023 (UTC).[reply]

Nationality of Kevin C. Rowe[edit]

Hello Burmeister! I saw that you recently edited the Kevin C. Rowe-page. There Rowe is listed as an Australian zoologist – however at Wikidata he is listed as a "zoólogo norte-americano" i.e. U.S. zoologist: Q27838121. I know that he's been affiliated to the University of Melbourne, but Wikidata states that he was born in Newport Beach, California, which would make him American. Do you happen to know his true nationality? Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 02:43, 14 September 2023 (UTC).[reply]

@Tommy Kronkvist: heya Kevin is American, just lives in Australia nowadays, just as I am an Australian who happens to live in Brazil. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 04:02, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Scott! The Wikispecies page as well as the Wikidata item are now updated accordingly. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 04:58, 14 September 2023 (UTC).[reply]

Template:BHL and Template:BHL page[edit]

Hello Burmeister,

Could you please explain me this edit? To me, BHL and BHL page are very similar; with the appropriate parameters, they render the same: page/13715157: BHL, 13715157: BHL. Shouldn't it be possible to use them interchangeably? Please note that I've used the template as an example with the use of in Template:Reftemp/doc. I thought using the BHL page template was a bit simpler. I see it being used more than the BHL template these days. Korg (talk) 12:30, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, BHL is older and always been used in template references. BHLpage was create after and the use is for cite specific page in taxon pages, page of original descriptions and subsequent combinations (I create this template for that use, after someone change without discussion). I don't see any discussion that refute the use of BHL template, so I will continue using it for reference templates. In my opinion, these templates should remain separate in their use, BHL for reference templates and BHLpage for the main domain. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 12:46, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed there are a third template: BHL item! Maybe it would be a case of merging the three into one and making it easier for everyone!! Burmeister (talk) 13:05, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply! I think I understand your reasoning, and I respect your choice of using the BHL template, but I don't think that the two templates should have separate uses, depending on the type of the page. I see them as an aid to create and display a link in a simple way. After all, it is always possible to create a link in the traditional way :-) (BHL).
I don't think anyone would object to the use of BHL. But please note that BHL page is also being used in reference template pages (see for example Template:Reinbold, 1907, Template:Proctor, 1965, Template:Smith, 1791a or Template:Penak & Zinn, 1943, all created by different users).
Yes, there are three templates that display a link to BHL, and their merger could indeed be considered! Kind regards, Korg (talk) 15:25, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Geodia nigra[edit]

Hello Burmeister! Could you please have a look at the Geodia nigra page? Do you know which one of the taxon names that is the "most valid", today? Thanks! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:55, 13 October 2023 (UTC).[reply]

Hi! Geodia nigra Lindgren is a junior homonym already replaced by a nomen novum Geodia nilslindgreni in 2020, so I redirect it to the valid name. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 19:10, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Block Cross-wiki vandal[edit]

Hi, please block User:Nassimohr01, and delete their contributions; they are very bad words in Arabic. Thanks in advance كريم رائد (talk) 10:01, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's still one edit summary left which I can't hide: I'm a Wikispecies Bureaucrat but need Oversighter rights for this, and Wikispecies doesn't have any local Oversighters. I'll dig further to try and solve it. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:21, 27 December 2023 (UTC).[reply]

Which "S. McPherson"?[edit]

Hello. Do you happen to know the full name of the collector called "S. McPherson" on the Ascidia paulayi page? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 23:40, 15 January 2024 (UTC).[reply]

Hi! In the article only mention S. McPherson, nothing more. Burmeister (talk) 23:43, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I found out that it's probably a "Sarah McPherson". The very next day she collected other specimens on the same island in the French Polynesia, again together with Lotufo and Gravier-Bonnet: Detail of Specimen No. BMOO-08730. However neither we nor Wikidata have any information about her. She might not even be a taxonomist, so I guess we leave her name unlinked, at least until we know more. Again, thank you for your quick reply. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 01:07, 16 January 2024 (UTC).[reply]

Duplicate pages for Peruvian herpetologist Nelly Carrillo[edit]

Oi. I just noticed that there are two pages for the late Peruvian herpetologist Nelly Carrillo. One of them, with the title "Nelly Carrillo Tarazona de Espinoza", was started by you in August 2020. The other, with the title "Nelly Carrillo", was started by Open2universe in January 2011. Each page has good information which doesn't appear on the other. With my limited computer skills, I'm afraid that if I were to try to combine the two, I would lose some of that information. Would you be so kind as to combine the two pages? Obrigado antecipadamente. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 15:40, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I will make the merge of the two pages. Thanks, Burmeister (talk) 16:33, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page numbers etc.[edit]

Hello Burmeister. I really appreciate your many edits, but where in Wikispecies do you find a discussion where the consensus is that page numbers for taxon descriptions does not belong to the reference section? Surely that may sometimes be helpful to some of our users, who maybe are not interested in always reading the whole protologue? And it is a reference, after all. Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:55, 12 April 2024 (UTC).[reply]

I don't ever see a discussion for include pages on references section! Reference section is for references, the relevant pages are linked where them are relevants, in name section, page description, page where are recombinations etc. Citing the pages again in the references section is duplicating the information already entered previously. What is the reason for this duplication of information? Burmeister (talk) 17:01, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Add: Wikispecies:Village Pump/Archive 59#Preferred format for reference section, a beginning of discussion that does not evolve! my opinion hasn't changed :) Burmeister (talk) 17:10, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I remember that discussion very well! As far as I recall I mostly agreed with you. :-) A few years earlier (December 2015) we had a poll about the reference format, and since nothing has really changed formally I guess that the outcome of that poll is still the "official guideline".
Personally I think that the Reference section should be the primary place for all references: that is also why we have duplicate links to the author pages there, and not only have author links in the Name and Synonyms sections. In other words: in my opinion it is the links in the Name and Synonyms sections that are the duplicates, not the ones in the Reference section. For example, do you remember how User:Stho002 frequently added duplicate reference templates to the Name section, instead of only in the Reference section? (See this edit, for example.) All the rest of us had the opinion that the links for references should stay in the Reference section, and not be placed in the name section.
To conclude: I can of course see your point. It is relevant. Unfortunately the poll from 2015 doesn't say anything about page numbers in the Name/Synonyms sections. Perhaps we should bring up "your" discussion from 2022 again? :-)
Lastly, thank you for your contributions, and have a nice weekend. Best regards, Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 18:20, 12 April 2024 (UTC).[reply]
Perhaps it is necessary to discuss the format of the pages as a whole! Addressing all aspects necessary to build a readable and understandable database. Much of what is still going on today comes from the time of Stho002, some were discontinued, others are followed without discussion. There are many issues to standardize!!
